Open Three, Rush Four & VCF – Core Attack Patterns Every Player Must Learn
All powerful Gomoku attacks are built from three core patterns: open three, rush four, and VCF. Beginners often place stones randomly without forming structured lines, which makes it impossible to create unstoppable winning threats. Mastering these three tactics lets you turn simple stone placements into continuous pressure, force your opponent into constant defense, and create double-threat opportunities.
An open three means three connected stones with empty spaces on both ends of the line. This pattern is extremely valuable because you can extend it into an open four on your next move, a threat the opponent cannot fully block in one turn.
A rush four is four connected stones with at least one empty end. Once you create an open rush four, your opponent must block it immediately, otherwise you win on the next turn. Rush fours are your main forcing tool.
Many new players waste turns creating weak closed fours. An open four is far stronger, as it leaves your rival with only one valid defensive move, while you keep freedom to build other lines simultaneously.
VCF stands for Victory by Continuous Four. This advanced tactic means creating a non-stop chain of rush four threats. Each forced block from your opponent lets you extend another line, until you finally reach five stones in a row.
VCF sequences guarantee victory if executed correctly, as your opponent has zero chances to launch counterattacks while forced to respond to every four-line threat. VCF is the standard winning method in mid and endgame play.
Start the opening by building two separate open threes around the board center. On your next turns, convert one open three into a rush four to force a block. While the opponent defends, expand your second open three and connect the lines to start a VCF chain. This simple workflow defeats most casual players reliably.
Without understanding these three core patterns, you will struggle to win consistently even against medium-difficulty AI. Spend time practicing pattern recognition in the online game panel to train your eyes to spot open threes instantly.
