Create Two Simultaneous Winning Threats Your Opponent Cannot Block Both
A double threat occurs when a single stone placement creates two separate unblockable winning chances at the same time. Since each turn only lets the opponent place one stone, they can only block one threat, leaving the second line open for you to win on your next move. This is the most reliable winning tactic in standard freestyle Gomoku.
Two independent open three lines crossing at your new stone. The rival can only block one open three, letting you turn the other into open four next turn.
One immediate four threat plus a developing open three. Blocking the four leaves the open three free to expand into another rush four.
Start early by splitting your stones across two different axes, instead of stacking all pieces on one single line. Control two separate areas near the board center, and slowly extend both lines into open threes. Look for an intersection point where one new stone connects both chains into dual open threes.
Many players fail to create double threats because they only build one attacking line at a time. Balance your expansion horizontally, vertically and diagonally to maintain multiple potential lines simultaneously.
Once your opponent sets up a clear double threat, the match is almost lost unless you can create your own rush four first. A counter rush four forces them to block your line instead of completing their winning move, breaking their double kill window.
Prevention is far easier than defense. Always watch for rival stones forming two separate open threes, and block the critical intersection point before they complete their double threat setup.
When playing against medium or hard AI in the online panel, actively search for double threat opportunities every turn. Use the Hint tool to view recommended moves, and observe how the AI prioritizes creating dual-line pressure. After several training matches, you will automatically spot cross-line double threat positions without slow calculation.
Combining double threat logic with the open three and VCF knowledge from previous guides creates a complete offensive toolkit that works against all casual and intermediate opponents.
